He is Sonic's darker counterpart and in his debut in Sonic Adventure 2, citizens and GUN troops confused him for Sonic which led to Sonic's capture at the beginning of the game. He shares many of Sonic's abilities. Unlike Sonic's optimistic and cheerful attitude, Shadow is grim and very serious due to his troubled background although he is gradually overcoming his personal issues. Many scenes involving him are darker in tone in contrast to other characters and he is the star of the spinoff game Shadow the Hedgehog which is the darkest game in the Sonic franchise. He was unexpectedly popular in his debut. Sonic Team had only planned to use him for one game, but in response to his surprising popularity, his story arc was extended in subsequent games and he became a recurring character in the series.
