It is an action/platformer game originally released in 2001 for the Sega Dreamcast celebrating the franchise's 10th anniversary and holds the distinction of being the last Sonic game to be released on a Sega console. Its rerelease Sonic Adventure 2 Battle is also the first Sonic game to be released on a Nintendo console. The developers chose to port the game to Nintendo Gamecube because of its 56k technology. It has been rereleased in HD form for the Playstation Network and XBOX Live Arcade. The game and its rerelease sold very well and the Gamecube release is the 10th best selling Gamecube game to date, selling 1.44 million copies within the US by December 2007. For many people who never owned a Sega console/handheld, this was the first Sonic game they played. The game is directed by Iizuka Takashi with artwork by Hoshino_Kazuyuki and Uekawa_Yuji. Music is composed by Senoue Jun. Hunnid-P performs the rap songs that play on Knuckles stages. Crush 40 performs the rock song Live and Learn and Tony Harnell performs the song Escape from the City. The game is split into 2 story modes (Hero and Dark) plus one finale arc called Last Story. Sonic has been arrested by the law enforcement group GUN. for terrorist activity. He escapes from GUN and quickly discovers the truth, GUN has mistaken Sonic for a black hedgehog named Shadow who bares a passing resemblance to Sonic and was discovered in a GUN facility by Dr. Eggman after he broke into it. Dr. Eggman has reawakened Shadow and is working with him and Rouge the Bat in order to nab the Chaos Emeralds to power up a special weapon on the spaceship ARK called the Eclipse Cannon in order to take over the world. Sonic fights Shadow, but Shadow escapes and Sonic is again arrested by GUN and transported to Prison Island. Tails and Amy break Sonic out and together with Knuckles to stop Eggman's newest plot. As the heroes and antagonists gather the Chaos Emeralds, both sides gradually uncover the dark history behind the ARK. . . The game is designed to be faster paced in comparison to its predecessor. The game was designed to run at 60 frames per second. It removes the hub world system from the first Sonic Adventure game and also reduces the amount of play styles. Each of the heroes and antagonists has a counterpart with the same play-style. Sonic and Shadow's levels are like the Sonic levels of the first Sonic Adventure game with Sonic and Shadow going through the levels as fast they can while avoiding obstacles. These levels were designed to emphasize the extreme speed of both characters. At the same time they did not want to focus solely on speed so they incorporated obstacles and environmental changes to give each level a certain 'tempo.' The developers also used locations from the United States for inspiration for some of the level designs like San Francisco (City Escape) and Yosemite National Park. Knuckles and Rouge explore large environments searching for jewels while avoiding various obstacles. Miles Prower and Dr. Eggman pilot mechs and participate in shoot em up esque battles with various enemies. Besides the main gameplay, there is also competitive multiplayer which based off of the play styles seen in the main game. There is also a Chao Garden where the player can raise Chao. The game is notably darker in tone in comparison to most Sonic games especially in the climactic Last Story arc where the characters uncover the unpleasant history behind the ARK. It also introduces the Sonic's serious and brooding counterpart Shadow who proved very popular. He was originally intended to be a one shot character, but his popularity led to him becoming a series mainstay. Rouge the Bat has also appeared in many subsequent Sonic games. The games associate a specific music genre to its various characters: Sonic's levels are often accompanied by upbeat rock music, Knuckles' levels are set to hip hop with lyrics written from Knuckles' point of view which represent his thoughts while he's hunting for treasure, and Rouge's levels are set to jazz. The final Sonic and Shadow fight and the first Sonic city level City Escape was remade for Sonic Generations. In the 3DS version, Sonic faces Shadow at Radical Highway and the Cannon's Core battle from Sonic Adventure 2 is also remade.
