It was adapted into an anime TV series by Wit_Studio and Cloverworks. The anime was directed by Furuhashi Kazuhiro and has a soundtrack composed by Miyazaki Makoto and Mutsuki Shuhei of [K]now_Name. The series is set in a fictional world inspired by mid 20th century Cold War-era Europe. The setting is divided into two nations, Westalis and Ostanis, which are currently in a state of peace, but there are still underlying tensions between the two. The series follows the top Westalis spy Twilight, who takes on the most clandestine missions to keep the peace and further Westalis' interests. Twilight receives his most unusual mission yet when he's assigned to get close to Donovan Desmond, who's the leader of an extremist faction in Ostanis. Desmond, however, is a mysterious recluse who only publicly appears when his son's elite school has a major activity. The only way to get close to Desmond is for the single Twilight to go undercover, start a family of his own, and enroll his child into the school, all within seven days! Twilight goes undercover under the alias of Loid Forger, and to create his family, adopts an orphan named Anya, and marries a young woman named Yor Briar. Unbeknownst to him, the two of them have secrets of their own, Anya is actually a telepath and is the only one who knows the truth about her newfound parents. Yor is actually the most dangerous hitwoman of Ostania. To complete the mission and maintain Twilight's cover, the three of them now have to act as a perfectly normal family. The series marked a major turning point in Endou's career. Endou had been a professional mangaka for over a decade, but had consistently struggled to get a serialized manga going. His body of work consisted of either one shots or series that were canceled due to not attracting enough readers. For this manga, he teamed with his long-time friend and editor Shuhei Lin. Endou had previously predominantly created serious action manga, but for this story, Lin suggested that he try something lighter and more comedic. Endou utilized ideas from previous one-shots, Rengoku no Ashe, I Spy, and Ishi ni Usubeni, Tetsu ni Hoshi to create this story. Spy x Family became Endou's 1st successful manga and was major success as soon as it came out. In its debut year, it was named No. 1 Popular Web Comic of 2019, No. 1 Popular Shonen Jump + work, and a Signature Work of Jump+. In 2020, it came in 1st on Honya Club's Nationwide Bookstore Employees' Recommended Comics of 2020 list, and was named the best manga for male readers by Kono Manga ga Sugoi. It sold over 15 million copies in Japan by April 2022.
