As a long-running character and series that has been handled by many different creators, his characterization and exact powers vary. His standard background story is this: he was born as Kal-El and was sent to Earth as a baby upon his home planet Krypton's destruction. Once on Earth, he was taken in by the kindly Jonathan and Martha Kent and is given the name Clark. Clark lives in the small town of Smallville, Kansas. Although he tries to lead a normal life, he gradually realizes that he is very different from everyone else because he has a superhuman level of strength, stamina, and senses. Nevertheless, his adopted parents accept him and their kindness becomes a great inspiration for him. He is generally portrayed as an ideal hero with a strong sense of compassion for everyone. While how powerful Superman actually is varies on the source, he is often portrayed as being extremely powerful and one of the most powerful characters in a superhero story. He can fly fast enough to break the sound barrier and go into space with no adverse effects. He is impervious to all but the most devastating attacks, though he can be harmed when hit with Kryptonite or magic based attacks. He is strong enough to throw buildings around, stop planes with his bare hands, and even move planets! However, he often intentionally limits his abilities to just enough to defeat the current threat without killing, fearing that he will slide downwards morally if he uses his formidable powers too carelessly, only using the full extent of his powers when dealing with more extreme threats. In stories where Superman is teamed up with other superheroes, Superman usually deals with the more powerful enemies while the other heroes solve other problems that he is too busy to solve. Superman also has super senses and can sense danger approaching other people even when he is physically far away. The character and his series has even been used to successfully solve real life social problems; the radio show The Adventures of Superman was responsible for undermining the hate group the Ku Klux Klan and preventing it from spreading in northern United States. As his civilian persona Clark Kent, he is an unassuming and clumsy reporter who works at the Daily Planet in the big city of Metropolis. His attitude is reminiscent of a folksy small town boy in contrast to everyone else in Daily Planet who grew up in the city. He wears glasses and often acts less confident than his Superman persona. Superman's love interest is fellow reporter Lois_Lane. Lois is often portrayed as being attracted to the courageous and handsome Superman persona, but does not realize that the seemingly awkward Clark and Superman are the same person. It is popular to pit Superman against Dragonball's Son Goku in crossover battles as both characters are ideal heroes with similar origins and extreme powers. He is part of the DC_Comics universe and is a member of the Justice League.
