It is also known as Nicky Larson in France. The French localization also renamed the characters. It was adapted into an anime TV series in 1987 that spanned multiple seasons. The TV series tones down some of the racier sexual jokes in the manga, especially the jokes revolving around Ryou's penis, and compresses many of the cases Ryou deals with so that they can fit into a single 24 minute long episode though there are a few multi-episode arcs. The anime's chronology is also different from the manga. The anime features a pop and jazz soundtrack with plenty of vocal songs composed specifically for the series. Saeba_Ryou is a legendary sweeper known as the City Hunter who lives in Shinjuku. He is famous for his superb skills with guns and is hired to be a bodyguard or to eliminate people who are bothering or have hurt his clients, who call for him by placing an XYZ on a board in the middle of the city. He works with his friend Makimura_Hideyuki on various jobs but on one rainy night, Makimura is killed after he refuses a job from a sleazy drug lord. Ryou avenges his partner's death putting him and his partner's sister Makimura_Kaori at risk. Ryou encourages Kaori to run away, but she opts to stay in the same city and becomes Ryo's partner in sweeping. The series follows their various adventures on the job. The series was very successful and is, counting the alternate continuity series Angel_Heart, Hojou Tsukasa's longest running series. The series became one of Weekly Shonen Jump's best-selling titles, selling over 35 million copies in Japan. It is especially popular within Taiwan, Hong Kong, and France and was adapted into multiple Hong Kong live action films, the most well known starring Jackie Chan as Saeba Ryou. As Jackie is the star of the film, the film places more emphasis on hand to hand combat although Ryou in the film is still an expert in guns. The film also retains the tone of the anime/manga. The 1991 Hong Kong film Savior of the Soul (Gauyat Sandiu Haplui) is the loosest adaptation, featuring the characters of Saeba Ryou, Makimura Kaori, Makimura Hideki, and Silver Fox, but offering a completely different story and setting. There is also the 1997 HK film Mr. Mumbles (Meng Bo), which is closer to the source even though the characters' names have been changed. It has also been adapted into a Korean live action drama, but the drama is radically different from the anime/manga despite having the same title. It has also been adapted into 2019 live action French film titled Nicky Larson et le Parfum de Cupidon starring and directed by Philippe Lacheau, the first Western live action adaptation and is notably one of the most faithful to the manga in spite of the cast being French. The series frequently alternates between serious gunplay action and wacky sex comedy. The artwork is normally in a relatively realistic style but during comedic scenes, the characters will often switch to a less detailed cartoony appearance. Protagonist Ryou exemplifies the series' changing moods as he often alternates between being a suave and hyper competent sweeper and a goofy lecherous man. The series also has the most well known use of the word mokkori, which Ryou is very fond of saying whenever he gets sexually excited. Mokkori is supposed to be the sound of something rising quickly. Ryou is also one of the fighters in the Shonen Jump crossover fighting game Jump_Force, which marks the first time he has been rendered in 3D.
