Now Viewing: elfen_liedTag type: Copyright エルフェンリート A dark horror romance manga written and drawn by Okamoto_Lynn. It ran from June 6, 2002 to August 25, 2005. It was adapted into an anime TV series which ran from July 25, 2004 to October 17, 2004. The anime was directed by Kanbe Mamoru and written by Yoshida Takao with characters designed by Kishimoto_Seiji. The soundtrack was composed by Konishi Kayo, Moka, and Kondoo Yukio. The title is German for Elf Song, and is taken from a poem of the same name written by Eduard Mörike. Said poem was turned into a song by composer Hugo Wolf. There are two dominant species in the world, humanity and the Diclonii. The Diclonii are evolved humans and look the same as humans except for prominent horns on their heads. They are more powerful than humans, having control over invisible arms known as vectors. However, Diclonii are feared by humans and are discriminated against. Yet, humans are fascinated with them as well and they are kept within laboratories where they are subjected to brutal experiments. Lucy is an infamous and ruthless member of the Diclonii species, having already amassed a massive body count by the start of the series. She is kept heavily guarded, but she still manages to break out, massacring almost everyone in the laboratory she's kept in. Her escape does not go smoothly as she is sniped in the head right when she's about to leave. The helmet she's wearing at the time saves her and she still escapes, but the injury affects her psyche causing her to develop a second more innocent and childlike personality named Nyuu. Lucy finds herself on the shores of Kamakura, Japan, where she meets a friendly local named Kouta and his cousin Yuka. When Kouta finds Lucy, she reverts to her Nyuu persona and Kohta decides to take the innocent girl in and take care of her. But Nyuu's old persona Lucy is still present and her pursuers are still after her, both of which threaten to ruin her chance at starting a new peaceful life. Lucy's past sins also come back to haunt her and her new loved ones. . . Despite the cute and colorful art style, the series' story is very dark in tone, dealing with themes of prejudice and the question of 'who the real monster is.' It also features plenty of graphic violence and nudity to the point that it is one of the 38 anime/manga series to be banned in China. Quite a few of the characters also suffer sexual abuse and torture. The anime adaptation's opening is a fine art homage to Gustav Klimst with the Elfen Lied characters inserted into his paintings. Director Kanbe would do something similar in his next anime TV series, Sora no Woto. The anime also has a different ending from the manga, which had not concluded when the anime premiered. The anime does not adapt the later portions of the manga and makes quite a few changes to the source. The series is also known spawning the fan webcomic Nana's Everyday Life, which although comparatively more comedic, is also very dark in tone much like its source. The series also influenced the popular American series Stranger Things, whose creators The Duffer Brothers cited this series as an influence on the character Eleven.
