The film's soundtrack is composed by Klaus Badelt. The film takes place in 2072, Libria, a city state established after the third World War. It is ruled by the Tetragrammaton Council who blame emotion for causing humanity's woes; if emotion were to be completely suppressed, wars and violence would cease to exist. The citizens are required by law to be injected with Prozium, which will suppress their emotions. Those who disobey, known as Sense Offenders, are executed. The government is assisted by a team of expert gunslingers/police force called the Grammaton Clerics. Their job is to destroy anything that may provoke emotion such as art and music as well as eliminate the underground resistance movement. John Preston is an ace Grammaton Cleric whose wife Viviana was a Sense Offender and was summarily executed. Preston is completely loyal to the Tetragrammaton Council, but after he discovers that his Cleric partner Errol Partridge is a secret and unrepentant Sense Offender and accidentally fails to take his daily dose of Prozium, he begins to experience emotion, leading him to increasingly question the laws that Libria was built on. As Preston's loyalty begins to waver, he raises the suspicion of his coworkers The film was predominantly filmed in Berlin because the city had fascist architecture which the filmmakers felt suited the film, making the dictatorial government seem more powerful. The film was initially met with subpar reviews from critics and only made 5.3 million dollars internationally during its theatrical run. However, the film's stature and influence grew after it was distributed on video. The film is famous and influential for its unique style of gunplay, Gun_Kata, invented by Wimmer and fight choreographer Jim Vickers for this film, which provides an explanation for the use of the style. Wimmer came up with the style in his own backyard. It is a fighting style that mixes hand-to-hand combat with gunplay resulting in shootouts that look like a cross between a martial arts fight and a gunfight. In the film, gun kata is based on the idea that shootouts are statistically predictable, if one were to memorize the positions of the participants and the trajectories of their bullets, one can know where to position oneself and return fire. Guns also aren't just for shooting, they can be used as clubs. The film also has a unique muzzle flash, which has the same shape as the Tetragrammaton insignia. This style of gunplay has often been referenced in anime/manga/video games such as Grenadier, which features a climactic gunfight similar to the one in this film, and Blazblue, which has a playable fighter who uses this style. The film also inspired a visual novel fanfic written by Urobuchi_Gen titled Jouka_no_Monshou. Wimmer's next action film Ultraviolet would revisit many of the ideas within this film as well as feature Gun Kata. The film is also notable for having one of the highest on-screen body counts of any action movie with 236 deaths total. Preston alone kills 118 people, giving him the third highest kill score of a cinematic character. There is also no wire work used at all throughout the movie.
