The series is notable for introducing the concept of combining mechs, its over the top action, and sketchy art style with characters (heroes included) frequently flashing crazy smiles. It has received multiple anime adaptations of varying tones, styles, and faithfulness to the source. Its characters and mechs have consistently made appearances in Super Robot Wars series. The below are set in the same continuity and mostly feature a different set of heroes and villains though there are recurring characters like Nagare Ryoma and Jin Hayato. Getter Robo (1974) Getter Robo G (1975) Getter Robo Go (1991) Shin Getter Robo (1998) Getter Robo Ah (2002) Getter Robo Hien The Earth Suicide (2005) Also features one of the largest mechs in fiction with the Getter Emperor. One transforming mecha boss from Contra: Hard Corps might be inspired by the Getter Robo. Nakashima Kazuki, the head writer for Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, cited this series as TTGL's main inspiration and in Super Robot Wars Z2, the characters of both series interact with each other.
