He was born in Johnstone, Scotland on November 8, 1966, and grew up in Stratford-upon-Avon, England. He had a difficult childhood, his family constantly moved around and his father was abusive though Gordon got along well with his mother. Ramsay had his first restaurant working experience at 16, working as a dishwasher at an Indian restaurant, but at this time in his life, he wanted to be a professional soccer player, but frequent injuries to his knee squashed that dream. He then turned his attention to pursuing cooking full time, enrolling in North Oxfordshire Technical College, and getting a job at Wroxton House Hotel and then the Wickham Arms before deciding to work under then-rising star chef Marco Pierre White at Harveys. Afterwards, traveled around Europe, first by studying French cuisine, studying under famous Michelin-starred French chefs like Guy Savoy and Joël Robuchon, and then studied Italian cuisine. Upon returning to London, he began working as head chef at Michelin starred restaurants, but in 1998, he decided he wanted to start his own restaurants named after himself. At the same time, he began becoming the focus of documentary shows with his first one being 1998's Boiling Point. His new restaurants and his documentaries proved to be major successes, leading him to appear on more documentary and reality shows such as Kitchen Nightmares, which involves Ramsay heading to struggling restaurants and revamping them, and Hell's Kitchen, a competitive reality show where two teams compete to become head chef at a restaurant. Besides his cooking skills, Ramsay is famous for his bluntness and volatile temper, which emerges when he gets frustrated with someone's incompetence, leading to him throwing out colorful and profane insults. However, he is notably much more gentle and patient when dealing with children and forgoes his famous profanity in his role as judge in Masterchef Junior He is married to Cayetana Elizabeth Hutcheson, and has five children with her: Megan, Holly, Jack, Matilda, and Oscar. Said children have appeared on some of his shows and Matilda has become a star chef with her own show, Matilda and the Ramsay Bunch.
