It is a real robot action/war anime film that was released on March 16, 1991. It was written and directed by series creator Tomino_Yoshiyuki. The characters were designed by Yasuhiko_Yoshikazu, returning from Gundam and Gundam Zeta, and the mechs were designed by series regular Okawara_Kunio. The orchestral score was composed by Kadokura Satoshi. It is set in the Universal Century but thirty years after Char's Counterattack, so none of the characters from the early Gundam series make an appearance here and the story features an entirely brand new cast and conflict as a way to make the story more accessible to a wider audience. In the year UC 0123, the Earth Federation colony Frontier IV is suddenly attacked by the military branch of Cosmo Babylonia, Crossbone Vanguard. In the ensuing chaos, Seabrook Anno is separated from his close friend Cecily Fairchild. Seabrook and his friends are dragged into fighting by the Federation due to to lack of other available manpower. Furthermore, they soon learn that their friend Cecily is actually affiliated with Cosmo Babylonia: her true birth name is Berah Ronah and she is part of the Ronah family, the militaristic rulers behind Cosmo Babylonia. Cecily, against what she believes to be right, finds herself being dragged into the Ronah family's schemes, putting her into opposition with her old friends. . . The film was envisioned as full blown TV series much like Tomino's Gundam and Gundam Zeta. However, the project was plagued with numerous behind the scenes troubles and the final product ended up being a two hour film that was essentially a truncated version of the original plan. Nevertheless, Tomino wrote a novelization that included more details that he wanted in the story and followed the movie up with a manga sequel called Crossbone_Gundam. The movie also notably reverses the escalating sizes of the series' mechs. Tomino and Okawara crafted the mechs to be smaller and sleeker as a way to make it easier to convert to real life model kits.
