The plants in this genus are native to subtropical and tropical areas, especially in Asia and Oceania, where they are valued for their often showy flowers which can be used to make hibiscus tea. Hibiscus flowers are the national symbol of South Korea and Malaysia, and the flowers are traditionally worn by the girls of Hawaii and Tahiti. In anime art, they are often used as hair ornaments for bikini-clad girls in beach settings. The most commonly depicted flower variation, which is reddish, is most likely of the species Hibiscus rosa-sinensis, commonly known as "Chinese hibiscus", "China rose", and "Hawaiian hibiscus", but there are other color variations such as pink, white, yellow, orange and purple, depending on the species and exact cultivar.
