He started off as a hentai artist, some of the characters for Hellsing originate in a hentai one shot called The Legend of a Vampire Hunter that is effectively a Hellsing prototype, before moving on to seinen action manga. He has an androgyny fetish and likes to have his female characters dress in suits. He also likes to draw large and detailed guns. Notably the minor villain Rip Van Winkle from Hellsing embodies a lot of things Hirano likes. His characters have a penchant for flashing deranged looking grins, including the 'heroes'/anti-heroes. He also frequently has the characters faces covered in shadow except for their eyes as a way to make them look more imposing. He is notorious for inconsistent releases with the Hellsing prequel manga Hellsing the Dawn suffering the most from this tendency.
