It was originally a series of spy thriller novels written by Ian Fleming, and the franchise debuted on 1953 with the book Casino Royale. However, the more action-oriented film franchise is far more well known and is one of the longest running film series starting with Dr. No in 1962. Since the films have gone on for such a long time, James Bond has been played by multiple actors as actors get too old to convincingly play the character or the producers feel that another actor would be better at revitalizing the series and keeping it going. The actor changes has the unintentional side effect of James Bond noticeably aging with each film and then suddenly looking younger after being replaced with a different actor. The iconic status of the films has often led to the actors who played Bond to become closely associated with the characters. While the series varies in tone depending on the entry, there are certain recurring elements of the franchise. The series popularized a glamorous take on secret agents with the series hero James Bond living an expensive lifestyle, attending parties, wearing suits, driving fancy cars, etc as he travels around the world on his missions with one film taking place for the most part in Japan, You Only Live Twice. He also seduces various sexy women from around the world. After the iconic point of view gun barrel sequence where Bond shoots at the camera and kills an unseen assailant, the films tend to begin with an action sequence of some kind, usually involving Bond on a mission. This storytelling device was a major influence on other action movies which often begin in such a fashion. After the opening action scene ends, there is an elaborate animated credits that often feature silhouettes of women and a theme song composed and performed specifically for the movie before the main story begins. Bond deals with antagonists ranging from rival spies to megalomaniacal super villains. Bond often has to deal with villains with a distinctive physical feature or an unique trick like Oddjob's deadly hat. Most of the films are standalone although there are occasional references to past entries and the films are all set in the time period they were made in. As the series has gone on for so long, the films have updated the clothing, technology, music, and even characterization to reflect the times. The series has been adapted into video game with the 1997 first person shooter game Goldeneye being the most well known adaptation and is also the source of Japanese Get Down! meme. Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater homages the James Bond series by being set in the 1960s when the film series began to take off and featuring a James Bond esque opening. The female lead of the game EVA is also reminiscent of a Bond girl and one of the characters in the game, Major Zero, is a big fan of the Bond films. The Read or Die OVA also features a James Bond esque opening and theme song.
