キルラキル

A magical girl action anime TV series animated by Trigger_(company). It aired from October 3, 2013, to March 27, 2014. The manga adaptation began a day after the anime started airing. An epilogue OVA episode was released on September 3, 2014. It notably reunites quite a few of the cast and crew members who worked on the 2007 super robot Gainax anime Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann like director Imaishi_Hiroyuki and head writer Nakashima Kazuki. Like said series, this series has plenty of over-the-top action and plenty of hot-blooded characters. Due to the similarities and various creator connections between both Kill La Kill and TTGL, it is common for Kill La Kill fan art to include references to TTGL. The characters are designed by Sushio who also worked on TTGL. Quite a few of the voice actors in this series have also worked on other productions that involved Imaishi and his fellow animators like Fujimura Ayumi who played Kneesocks in Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt and plays Mankanshoku Matarou in this series. Music is composed by Sawano Hiroyuki. Many of the vocalists who have collaborated with Sawano on other anime soundtracks like Kobayashi Mika and Aimee Blackshleger perform original songs for this series. The vocal songs are predominantly in English with one song sung in German.

Much like how TTGL was based around drills and spirals, this series is based around clothing, which, in this series, is literally a source of power. The basic premise of the series was conceived after the creators noted that the Japanese pronunciation of the word fascism is very similar to the Japanese pronunciation of fashion. The title, pronounced like kiru ra kiru in Japanese, is also a pun. Kiru can either mean "kill," "to cut," or "to wear." Furthermore, the Japanese pronunciation of the words school uniform, and conquest, is the same, seifuku. The characters' weapons are also related to clothing; for example, Ryuuko uses one-half of a giant scissor like a sword while Tsumugu uses handguns that fire needles and which also look like sewing machines. The clothing theme extends to the dialogue of the series; characters often make clothing-related analogies and comparisons when talking to each other. The series also has plenty of fan service for both male and female characters.

The anime has quite a few major plot twists, especially during the second half of the series. Those who wish to be unspoiled should be wary of searching for anything relating to this series online.

It is set in a Japan which is filled with run-down shanty towns and schools are run like nations/fiefdoms. Honnoji Academy is one of the most infamous schools within this setting. It is run like a fascist police state by the dictatorial female student council president Kiryuuin Satsuki. No one dares to oppose her and her minions and anyone who does is publicly punished. Furthermore, Kiryuuin and her minions wear special school uniforms called Goku uniforms that give them superhuman powers making it virtually impossible for anyone without said uniforms to win a fight against them to top it off, Satsuki's mother Ragyou, the CEO of the biggest and most powerful corporation in the world, owns the school. The students and teachers live in fear of Satsuki and have mostly given up and accepted her rule.

Things change when a hot-blooded female transfer student/delinquent named Matoi Ryuuko transfers into the school and immediately challenges Satsuki because Matoi suspects that she knows something about the murder of her estranged father Matoi Isshin. Matoi uses half of a giant scissor blade in combat, the other half is owned by the murderer of her father. The weapon is designed to counter the Goku uniforms. Unfortunately, Ryuuko is immediately shown just how steep the odds of her accomplishing her goal is as she is easily defeated by one of the school's many club presidents, showing that she is nowhere near Satsuki's level, and is forced to run away to survive. Things turn around once Ryuuko, with the secret help of her homeroom teacher Mikisugi Aikurou, stumbles upon a special living uniform, invented by her father, which feeds off of blood. The uniform puts itself on Ryuuko's body and gives Ryuuko the strength and power to combat Satsuki and her minions on a more equal footing. Ryuuko dubs her new ally Senketsu, and she reissues her challenge to Satsuki and sets out to find out the truth behind her father's murder.

The series has numerous references to 1970s Japanese pop culture: the episodes in the series are named after 1970s Japanese pop songs, Ryuuko has quite a few similarities with the iconic action-oriented magical girl protagonist Cutey Honey, and the ending animation of the series is an homage to the opening of the 1980s live-action adaptation of the 1970s female delinquent manga Sukeban Deka with Ryuuko standing in for Asamiya Saki. The main creators of Kill La Kill, Imaishi Hiroyuki, and Nakashima Kazuki, have previously worked on a Cutey Honey adaptation at Gainax, Re: Cutey Honey.

The series often puts big red text on screen whenever introducing a character, concept, attack, or even when characters make speeches with the text highlighting the especially important aspects of the speech. The frequent subtitle use is also used for quite a few fourth-wall-breaking gags. This tendency is often emulated in fan art. The series also makes extensive use of pastel chalk freeze frames. Every episode of the series concludes with one and they are often used in the middle of an episode for dramatic emphasis. The series often alternates between fluid and limited Inferno Cop-Esque animation, often within a single scene. The latter is often done for comedic effect and some characters like Harime Nui are predominantly animated with this style.

The anime was adapted into a video game in 2019 by Arc_System_Works titled Kill la Kill if, making the series the second Studio Trigger to work do so. The game adaptation, whose story is again written by Nakashima, is not a straight retelling of the original anime and shifts the perspective from Ryuuko to Satsuki.
