It was adapted into an anime TV series by Kinema Citrus that ran from July 7, 2017 to September 29, 2017. The anime was directed by Kojima Masayuki and written by Kurata Hideyuki with a soundtrack composed by Kevin Penkin. The characters were designed by Kise_Kazuchika. The series is set in the town of Orth, located on an island. This island is unusual for having a giant, seemingly bottomless pit right in the middle, known as the Abyss. The Abyss is so massive that each layer of the pit functions as its own world with unique environments, animals, and dangers. Within this Abyss, lies relics of bygone civilizations, making it an attractive prospect for cave raiders in spite of the danger. However, returning from the Abyss is even harder than going in, thanks to the curse of the Abyss. The further one goes in, the harsher the symptoms one will suffer when one tries to return the surface, to the point that trying to return from the bottom would mean almost certain death or worse. Orth is literally built around the Abyss and the Cave Raiders of the town are admired as heroes. Riko_(Made_in_Abyss)'s mother Lyza is one such hero. She had gone into the Abyss ten years ago and has yet to return, leaving Riko an orphan. The optimistic and adventure-loving Cave Raider in training wants to go into the Abyss to be like her mother and solve the mysteries of the Abyss. She jumps at the opportunity to do so once she is informed that some items that Lyza sent from the bottom were recovered. Riko teams up with Reg_(Made_in_abyss), a human-like cyborg boy that Riko had discovered while cave-raiding, to brave the dangers of the Abyss to reunite with her mother and solve the Abyss's mysteries, but in spite of the training they have received, they soon find that even they are not fully prepared for the true dangers within the Abyss... This series is notable for being deceptively lighthearted. While the art style and early chapters/episodes may suggest a more family-friendly adventure story, as the story goes on and the characters venture deeper into the abyss, the story becomes much darker and more violent to the point that when the anime TV series reached the point when the manga started becoming more violent, its rating was suddenly bumped up to an R-17 and stayed that way for the remaining episodes.
