The fantasy action adventure manga, written and drawn by Ohtaka_Shinobu, debuted in 2009 and is still ongoing. Unlike Ohtaka's previous manga, Sumomomo Momomo, Magi is comparatively more serious in tone. It was adapted by A-1 Pictures into an anime in 2012. The anime is directed by Masunari Koji and written by Yoshino Hiroyuki. It features an orchestral soundtrack composed by Sagisu Shiro and performed by the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra. Alibaba Salujah is a poor, money-obsessed teenage boy working for Budel, a selfish merchant and subordinate of the psychotic Chief of the Oasis Capital Qishan Jamil. Alibaba dislikes Budel and his job, but behaves submissively in Budel's presence because he believes that this is his best chance to earn some money and eventually conquer the local dungeon of Amon and gain an enormous amount of money and power. Alibaba's life changes once Alibaba meets a young, flute carrying boy named Aladdin. Aladdin has spent most of his life locked up and was freed by the djinn Uugo who he can summon with his flute. Because of this, Aladdin knows little of the outside world and is also free of the prejudices many people of the setting have which he demonstrates by cutting the chains off of slave named Morgiana. Aladdin's selfless actions begin to reawaken Alibaba's inner conscience and Alibaba ultimately quits working with Budel, deciding to follow what he believes is right. Alibaba teams up with Aladdin to conquer the dungeon of Amon. While in the dungeon they are in competition with Jamil and his slaves, which include Morgiana. But conquering Amon is only the first step in a much larger adventure as Aladdin, Alibaba, and Morgiana soon become involved in conflicts between the kingdoms of the world. The manga also has a short one-shot prequel titled Sinbad no Bouken which tells of Sinbad's adventures.
