It is directed by Asuke Shigeyuki and produced by Tezuka Takashi and Kimura Hiroyuki. Music is composed by Fujii Shiho, Nagamatsu Ryo, and Nagata Kenta. It notably brings back the Koopalings in a Mario platformer after a very long absence and Kamek, one of the major villains of Yoshi's Island, also returns and even takes on Mario and co. in a boss fight. The famous airships from Super Mario Bros. 3 also return and much like Super Mario World, the Koopalings have their own castle where Mario and co. must confront them. The game also has co op multiplayer with up to four players. The playable characters are Mario, Luigi, a Blue Toad, and a Yellow Toad. Yoshi also returns and functions the same way he does in Super Mario World. This game introduces a Super Guide system, a mechanic that would be reused in Super Mario Galaxy 2 and Donkey Kong Country Returns. If a player dies eight times on one level, an exclamation block will appear. If the player chooses to hit the block, the game will provide the option to allow the game to beat the level for the player and allowing the player to move on in the game and prevent them from getting too frustrated from being stuck on one level indefinitely. However, the level will not qualify as being completed if the player uses the guide until the player manages to complete it without the guide's help. If the guide appears at all throughout the game, the stars on the player's save file will not sparkle. Besides the Super Guide, the player can unlock videos created by Nintendo's staff showcasing various tricks the players can do as well as some level secrets. New Super Mario Bros. Wii, like Super Mario Bros. 4 (Super Mario World), is also a popular choice for hackers who have created their own levels. The game was a massive financial success and had the strongest debut out of any Wii game in Japan, selling 936,734 copies in four days. The game sold 26.26 million copies worldwide by March 2012.
