Now Viewing: platoonTag type: Copyright A dark 1986 war drama set in the Vietnam War. It was written and directed by Oliver Stone who served in the Vietnam War. This film is notably the first American film about the Vietnam War to be created by a war veteran and was based on his own experiences. The film stars Charlie Sheen, Tom Berenger, and Willem Dafoe. The year is 1967, the middle of the Vietnam War, American Chris Taylor drops out of college and volunteers to join the war effort. He is assigned to Bravo Company, 25th Infantry Division near the Cambodian border. It doesn't take long for Taylor's initial enthusiasm to fight to wane as he sees how things really are on the battlefield. Taylor becomes acquainted with two more experienced soldiers with polar opposite philosophies, Sergeant Elias and Staff Sergeant Barnes, both of whom become mentors for Taylor. However, the two soldiers' opposing mentalities soon creates conflict when Barnes kills a village chief's wife and proceeds to threaten the chief's daughter in order to get information, an action that Elias finds morally reprehensible. The platoon that Taylor is assigned to is divided with Taylor caught in the middle as he struggles to figure out the right thing to do. The film has a negative stance on the war, showing the tragic effects of the war on American soldiers' psyche as well as showing American soldiers committing grossly immoral acts. The film was intended to be a response to pro-war Vietnam War films like the 1968 film, The Green Berets. The film originated as a 1968 screenplay titled Break, which Stone wrote shortly after he returned from the war and before he went to film school. He tried repeatedly to get the film made, but was met with numerous obstacles, forcing him to put the movie on hold while he worked on other projects. He finally got to make Platoon 17 years after he first wrote Break. The film received generally positive reviews and won numerous awards. The film's poster, which also depicts the most famous scene from the film Elias being shot in the back numerous times by Vietnamese soldiers is frequently homaged and parodied. The film has also been adapted into multiple video games as well as a novel.
