The franchise was created by Nagoshi Toshihiro who also acts as a producer for each installment. Yokoyama Masayoshi acts as the main writer for the franchise's story. The soundtracks are generally composed by Shojo Hidenori and Sakamoto Hideki. The first game was released on December 8, 2005 for the Playstation 2. The original game was also adapted into a live action film in 2006. It was directed by Miike Takashi, a director known for making lots of yakuza films. It starred Kitamura Kazuki as Kiryuu. The franchise primarily followed the adventures of Kiryuu Kazama, a member of the Tojo clan, who is famous in the criminal underworld both for his formidable fighting skills and uncharacteristically for a gangster, a strong sense of morality. He was sent to prison because he took the fall for his best friend Nishikiyama Akira's murder of their boss Dojima Sohei. After his sentence is over, Kiryuu is immediately dragged back into the criminal lifestyle as he becomes embroiled in the Tojo's clan's conflicts with other gangs. The franchise has a wide variety of gameplay styles. The combat is styled as a 3d beat em up where the players gain experience with each fight they get into, which allows them to unlock more moves for each playable hero. Besides the characters' signature moves, the players can use the environment to their advantage during brawls. Many fights also have brief cinematic quick time event moments where players must follow the on-screen button prompt or risk suffering more damage. Outside of the combat, the games are noted for having a large amount of sidequests and mini-games that includes, karaoke sessions, crane games, arcade games that the player can enjoy at their own leisure. This also has an impact on the franchise's tone. The main story is a serious crime story with stylized action in the vein of Japanese and Hong Kong crime movies. The sidequests, on the other hand, take the same straight-faced tough heroes and thrust them into absurd and wacky scenarios for comic relief. The franchise is primarily set in Kamurocho, which is heavily based off of Kabukichou, Tokyo. Many real life locations in Japan are faithfully recreated in the game, and its portrayal of yakuza life has been noted by relatively accurate. This was accomplished in the first two games by hiring crime novelist Hase Seishu to ensure the games' accuracy. The franchise utilizes a heavily realistic art style, to the point that characters are often modeled after real life people or their own voice actors. The franchise was immensely successful in Japan and became one of Sega's flagship franchises from the 2000s onwards. By 2020, the series sold over 14 million copies internationally.
