Like many of the seiyuu who were in Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu, his career was boosted by the success of that series. However, Shiraishi did not play one of the main characters, SOS Brigade. Rather, he played the minor character Taniguchi. Nevertheless, he and the character became memetically popular thanks to a well known humorous scene in episode 10 of the broadcast order of the series where Taniguchi catches Kyon and Yuki in a compromising position while being unaware of the context. Shiraishi went on to voice and appear as a parody of himself in Kyoto Animation's next adaptation Lucky Star. He appears in both animated form and as his real self. This unique situation, as well as the series' success and his own popularity, allowed him to become the only live action character to be featured in Newtype magazine's Monthly 10 most popular male character list.
