In his debut appearance in the first Metal Gear game, he was almost a silent protagonist like fellow video game heroes Mario and Link. He had a few lines but what lines he did have didn't reveal much about his personality. Starting from Metal Gear 2, he gradually became the more fleshed out character that most fans of the series would be familiar with. He is a legendary war hero, but has become hardened and cynical due to his battlefield experiences and sees himself as more of a mercenary and a killer rather than a hero. The antagonists in games he stars in share the same opinion and Psycho Mantis, in particular, believes Solid Snake to be even crueler than Liquid. Nevertheless, he is a heroic and honorable warrior who exhibits compassion towards others, even taking the time to listen to his enemies dying speeches and obliging to their last wishes. He has prevented catastrophes multiple times and is able to defeat super-powered opponents despite having no special powers himself and never gives up despite the odds he's often faced with. The player can choose to make Snake even more compassionate or vicious depending on how s/he plays the games. In some games, it is possible to go through them without killing anyone. Although it is possible for Snake to slaughter virtually every enemy he comes across, Snake does not enjoy the experience and in Metal Gear Solid 4 will vomit out of disgust after killing 50 people in one Act while a brief flashback to Liquid Snake claiming Solid loves killing plays. He is the son of Big Boss/ Naked Snake, another legendary soldier/war hero, and his boss in the original Metal Gear game. While the two of men have a lot in common, Snake's relationship with him has been severely strained over the course of the first two Metal Gear games. Although Hal Emmerich is very different from Snake in personality and background, the two of them become best friends after Metal Gear Solid and Snake trusts Hal the most out of all the people he's known. He is usually depicted wearing a bandana, a mullet hair style, and a sneaking suit. His physical appearance was codified in Metal Gear Solid by artist Shinkawa_Yoji who used actors Christopher Walken and Jean Claude Van Damme as inspiration for his appearance. In the first Metal Gear game, he resembled Kyle Reese from Terminator and in the original release of Metal Gear 2, he looked like Mel Gibson, but in the Metal Gear Solid 3 Subsistence re-release of the game, his design was changed to his current one. His character is inspired by Escape from New York's protagonist Snake Plissken. He was one of the third party characters to appear in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, the other one being Sonic. In his stage Shadow Moses, it is possible for a player playing Snake to contact his allies through Codec and they will engage in a usually comedic conversation about the character Snake is fighting against. Snake uses many moves and weapons from the Metal Gear series although he does not use any handguns or knives. Snake's cardbox taunt is one of the few taunts in the game that can damage other fighters. He has a tendency to repeat what other people are saying to him as a question, which is often poked fun at by fans and even the English voice actor David Hayter himself. From Metal Gear Solid 2 onwards, he is also famous for being a male character whose butt gets a lot of focus due to his sneaking suit placing a lot of emphasis on his rear. He is quite fond of smoking although he does eventually admit that it's bad for him to do so. He is voiced by Ohtsuka_Akio and David Hayter (in English).
