It introduces the Koopalings and the airships into the Mario franchise. Bowser has stolen wands from various kings throughout the Mushroom Kingdom and has transformed them into animals. Mario and Luigi are assigned by Peach to retrieve the wands from the Koopalings and stop Bowser. The game was much larger in scope in comparison to its predecessors, featuring a world map and numerous levels and much more power ups. It also featured a duel mode based off of the arcade Mario Bros. game and Toad Houses where players can get new items. The concept of a world map was retained in many subsequent 2D Mario platformers and the airships were eventually rendered in 3d for Super Mario Galaxy. The game was enormously successful and holds the distinction of being the most successful non home-bundled game to date. It was prominently featured in the climax of the movie The Wizard.
