It is the notably the longest story arc in the franchise, running from volumes 9 to 18 in the light novel series, and it was split up into multiple seasons for the anime adaptation for a total of 47 episodes. In the original web novel, it was the final arc of the series, but writer Kawahara Reki decided to continue the franchise in with another story arc for the light novels, Unital Ring. This arc is much larger in scale, scope, and stakes, than its predecessors, and is considerably darker and bloodier. The arc starts after the conclusion of Mother's Rosario, and in the anime, after Ordinal Scale. Kirito has been once again recruited to test out a new virtual reality FullDive technology, the Soul Translator (STL), which is the most realistic and life-like technology he has ever tested. Once he is linked into the machine, he finds himself in a European fantasy inspired world called the Underworld that is so life life that it's like he actually grew up there and the 'NPCs' are practically indistinguishable from real people. He doesn't remember his life in Japan, but sees himself as a boy who grew up with two friends, Eugeo and Alice Zuberg, in a small village. Time passes differently between the game world and the real world. What seems like several years within the game may only be a few days in the real world. The kingdom he lives in, the Human Empire, is governed by the Axiom Church which has laid out laws that everyone must follow. Everyone's minds have been conditioned in such a way that intentionally breaking a law is unthinkable to them. However, Alice accidentally does just that one day by barely crossing the border between the Human Empire and the Dark Territory, which they are forbidden to cross. Because of her transgression, Alice is forcefully taken away from Eugeo and Kirito. At this point, Kirito finally wakes up from the test, losing his memory of the test even if the emotions he felt still linger. Soon after his return to the real world, Kirito is attacked by a member of the SAO player killer group Laughing Coffin, and is trapped in a near death comatose state. The only way to save Kirito is to use the STL technology. Once plugged back in, Kirito returns to the world years after the Alice incident, this time with his memories of Japan and knowledge of past VRMMO experiences intact. He reunites with Eugeo who is determined to find a way to save Alice, but is constrained by the laws of the land. Kirito and Eugeo embark on a quest to save their mutual friend and become embroiled in a conflict that shakes the very foundation of the Underworld. . . This arc has been adapted into video games and anime. For the anime, Ono Manabu directed the adaptation instead of Itou Tomohiko who directed all of the previous SAO anime adaptations. The characters were designed by Suzuki_Gou, Adachi_Shingo, and Nishiguchi_Tomoya. Thanks to the different crew, the adaptation has slight aesthetic differences from past SAO anime. Kajiura Yuki returns to compose the soundtrack. The anime adaptations ran from September 15, 2018 to July 11, 2020.
