It was originally released in the arcades in 2011, but received a home console release in 2012 for the PS3 and XBOX360 that brings back some characters that the original release didn't include like Tiger Jackson and Forest Law. DLC brings characters like Hirano Miharu and Dr. Bosconovitch back into the fighting ring and also allows Lili's butler Sebastian to be a playable character. Alternate personas for Lee Chaolan and Bob are also included: Violet for the former and Slim Bob for the latter. It was also ported to Wii U with some features exclusive to this release like giving the characters the ability to dress up as Nintendo characters. It also has a very flashy new stage with a cameo by Snoop Dogg, a fan of the series, complete with a rap song written specifically for the game. Like its predecessor, it brings back almost every playable character in the series to date, even those who have been absent for years, into one game. Some of the characters who have been brought back now sport new designs like Kazama Jun who now has a darker image and has her face designed to look more like her son Jin's and Kunimitsu who wears an outfit that reveals her thighs. Series regular Mishima Heihachi has also been de-aged and given a new voice actor (Ishizuka Unshou) due to his previous seiyuu Gouri Daisuke's tragic suicide. The game features an electronic heavy soundtrack like the rest of the series. Unlike past games, this game features quite a few dubstep tracks. The game retains the same rules as its predecessor, if one team member of a team of two is knocked out, the round ends. It is also possible to have 1 vs 2 matches or 1 vs 1 matches. Characters' outfits can be customized and characters can be given all sorts of items. The game received generally positive reviews and won Best Fighting Game of the Year awards from multiple gaming publications such as Gamespot, Game Informer, etc. It sold 1.35 million copies internationally by January 2013.
