The game's visual style is inspired by the artwork of Paul Cezanne. The game introduces quite a few new game mechanics into the series. The game makes use of the Wii Motionplus for its swordplay, which has been expanded from previous games. It also features orchestral music in its soundtrack much like Super Mario Galaxy. Link this time is even more athletic as he's now able to run faster and even run up walls, but he has a stamina meter so he can't be pushed too much. Shields are much more vulnerable this time and even metal shields can be broken. Link can also upgrade his gear. Link and his childhood friend/love interest Zelda (who notably isn't a princess this time) live a peaceful life on an isolated island above the clouds known as Skyloft. Its residents travel on large birds known as Loftwings and have never been underneath the clouds. Their idyllic life is suddenly disrupted when a sudden tornado separates the two of them while they are flying their Loftwings. Link is distressed, but that night, he meets Fi, the spirit of the Goddess Sword who gives him the chance to save Zelda. Link jumps at the opportunity and ventures underneath the clouds for the first time. He soon learns that Zelda is safe and is underneath the protection of a mysterious woman known as Impa. However, the Dark Lord Ghirahim wants to capture Zelda for his own nefarious purposes. Link pursues Zelda who is fulfilling a mysterious destiny around the surface world while trying to keep Ghirahim and his minions from getting their hands on her.
