Now Viewing: will_smith_slapping_chris_rock_(meme)Tag type: General Tag refers to the infamous incident at the 2022 94th Academy Awards show on March 27, 2022. It happened while comedian Chris_Rock was presenting the nominees for Best Documentary. During his presentation, he made a few jokes based off of a teleprompter script. However, the joke that sparked the incident was an ad-libbed one. Rock made a joke about Jada_Pinkett_Smith's appearance, "Jada, I love you. G.I. Jane 2, can't wait to see it, all right?" Jada, at this point, had lost her hair and the joke was a reference to Demi Moore's character in G.I. Jane shaved off her hair as part of joining the army. This joke got laughter from the audience, including Jada's husband Will_Smith. In contrast, Jada frowned at the joke, which Will noticed. This prompted Will to walk directly towards the stage and slapped Chris Rock hard across the face in a move considered uncharacteristic for him. Will returned to his seat, yelling "Keep my wife's name out of your fucking mouth!" and other expletives that were censored in the broadcast. Rock decided to keep the show going, ad-libbing a few jokes about what just happened. In spite of the incident, Will later won the Best Actor award for his performance in King Richard. However, Will's actions spawned intense backlash from fellow Hollywood actors and commentators, made national news, and became the subject of Internet memes which mostly make fun of the exact moment Smith slapped Rock. Smith later released an apology to Rock on his Instagram and was considered to have violated the Academy's Standards of Conduct for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences the academy decided to ban Smith for a decade.
