Stage 4 midboss of Touhou's The_Embodiment_of_Scarlet_Devil (EoSD) who lives in the Scarlet_Devil_Mansion, often seen in the Voile library. Koakuma has no official name; this was confirmed by Touhou's creator,ZUN, very early on. The commonly used name in the fanbase is Koakuma (小悪魔), meaning "Little Devil" or "Imp". ZUN used this term in an answer of the response to the question from the fans, while again stating at the same time that she was unnamed, though he did have rough sketches for a face sprite as well as plans to give her spell cards. She is commonly depicted with long_hair/red_hair and red_eyes, bat_wings/head_wings and (usually) on her back, and less frequently a demon_tail. Her usual attire is either a black dress or a skirt_set comprised of a skirt, vest, dress_shirt and a necktie. It is generally assumed by the majority of fans that Koakuma is Patchouli_Knowledge's summoned familiar and personal assistant, as she is rarely seen outside of the library and served as Patchouli's midboss in EoSD. Although there is nothing written about her to that effect in Touhou, itself, and ZUN describes her as an "imp", because her bat-wing-ear design looks similar to Morrigan_Aensland, who has come to be the memetic standard image of a succubus, some authors presume she's a succubus. As with many aspects of fanon personalities, how much this affects her personality, or whether it is true at all depends on the author. Unused sprites in the EoSD game files include a possible "EX-Koakuma" with violet hair and a purple arcane aura, which might have been meant to appear alongside Patchouli during the Extra Stage midboss fight. However, the sprites were not used and the form is not canon. Because there is a Makai_(Touhou) in Touhou, there are also others who imply that she has some connection to other Makai characters, like Shinki. Tying in to the theory that she is Patchouli's familiar, Makai is a likely place for her to have been summoned from.
