Now Viewing: crying_freemanTag type: Copyright クライング フリーマン A crime action manga written by Koike Kazuo and drawn by Ikegami_Ryoichi. It ran from 1986 to 1994. Like their other collaborations, the series is an adult-aimed work filled with bloody violence and softcore sexual content. Hino Emu is a 29 year old acclaimed artist who lives alone in a mansion after the death of her father. In spite of her relative success, she suffers from loneliness, but her life changes forever after she witnesses an assassination conducted by the infamous hitman, Crying Freeman. Freeman, despite being Japanese, is the most dangerous hitman employed by the Chinese crime group, the 108 Dragons. The man introduces himself to her by his real life Hinomura You, as an indirect hint that he will kill her too to remove all witnesses. However, she can't help but feel immediately drawn to the hitman, because he shed genuine tears right after he conducted his kill, a sign that there is humanity behind his seemingly cold exterior. She patiently waits for him to arrive to kill her and, when he does, she makes her final request: that he take her virginity before he kills her. He agrees to her first request, but for the first time in his life, he can't bring himself to kill his target. Instead, he defies the orders of his clan and decides to marry her, having her join the 108 Dragons by his side and abandoning their old public identities. Yoh and Emu become the new leaders of the 108 Dragons, but this paints a bigger target on them as various gangs and factions compete to destroy the 108 Dragons. The manga was adapted into an anime OVA that ran from September 1988 to January 1994 and was animated by Toei. The first three episodes were directed by Nishio Daisuke and the latter three were directed by Yamauchi Shigechi. The former were written by Shimizu Higashi and the latter were written by Ono Ryunosuke. The soundtrack was composed by Yoshino Hiroaki. The manga was also adapted into three live action films. The first was a 1990 Hong Kong film titled 自由人 (Zì Yóu Rén) and localized as Killer's Romance that was directed by Philip Ko and starred Simon Yam and Joey Wong as the You and Emu counterparts. The second was a 1991 Hong Kong film titled 紅場飛龍 (Hóng Chǎng Fēi Lóng), localized as The Dragon from Russia. This film starred Sam Hui and Maggie Cheung as the main characters and changed their backstory so that they knew each other as children before the main plot happens. The last adaptation to date is a 1995 Canadian film also titled Crying Freeman, which was directed by Christophe Gans and starred Mark Dacascos and Julie Condra as the main characters. Although this adaptation changed the setting to Canada and makes other changes, this film is notably the most faithful out of all the live action adaptations.
