Starting with this film, the Rebuild franchise begins to deviate significantly from the original Neon Genesis Evangelion's story, so if you haven't seen the film, be wary of spoilers when looking up information online. The film begins shortly after its predecessor, Shinji continues to fight Angels alongside Ayanami Rei at NERV, but in spite of his closer proximity to his father, Gendo, an emotional distance between the two remains. Shinji and Rei are soon introduced to a new ally/pilot, Soryu Asuka Langley (renamed Shikinami Asuka Langley in this continuity), a talented but cocky pilot who has little interest in working with the two. The three of them are forced to work together to fight the Angels while Gendo and his right hand man Fuyutsuki leave NERV to work on their secret plans concerning the EVAs. Shinji, Asuka, and Rei gradually form an odd bond and come to appreciate their growing connection with each other with Rei planning to organize a dinner party to bring Shinji and Gendou closer. However, a series of events threatens to break this newfound relationship. . . The film earned 43.86 million dollars internationally. The film won first place in the Animation category of the French Lyon Asian Film Festival and the award for Excellent Animation of the Year at the Japan Academy Prize for Animation of the Year.
