It has been adapted into three mangas, an anime adaptation and a video game. The anime is directed by Itou Tomohiko with characters designed by Adachi_Shingo. The soundtrack is composed by Kajiura Yuki. The novel debuted in 2002 and was originally intended as a submission for a Dengeki Game Novel competition. However, the book was too long and instead of shortening the book, Kawahara opted to withdraw from the competition and publish it online under the pen name Kunori Fumio. Kawahara wrote a few more volumes and short stories. In 2008, Kawahara participated in the competition again, this time submitting Accel World, which ultimately won the Grand Prize and is also set in the same universe as Sword Art Online. ASCII Media Works asked Kawahara to release his earlier story Sword Art Online in book form. Kawahara agreed and withdrew Sword Art Online from the web. The series's early stories, save chapter 16.5, were rereleased in book form in 2009. The series' immense popularity has allowed Kawahara to expand the story from the original 2002 story; the series has been ongoing since then. It is November 6, 2022, and the hotly anticipated MMORPG Sword Art Online, designed by Kayaba Akihiko, is about to debut. Sword Art Online is a highly life-like virtual reality MMORPG and is activated once the player puts on a virtual reality headgear called Nerve Gear, also designed by Kayaba. Nerve Gear stimulates the brain's five senses, allowing players to control their avatars with their minds. Kirito, who has had experience with Sword Art Online as a beta tester and greatly admires Kayaba, is especially excited to be playing the completed MMORPG. While in the Sword Art Online world, he meets and bonds with a newbie player named Klein and teaches him how to play the game. It seems like SAO will be a fun experience for everyone--until Klein and Kirito realize that they can not log out of the game. Kayaba summons all of SAO's players into a coliseum and appears before them in an avatar form. He tells everyone that the only way they can log out of SAO is to complete the seemingly impossible task of reaching the 100th floor of the game's main tower/dungeon. Having the players' real world friends and family remove the Nerve Gear is not an option because removing the headset will fry the players' brains, instantly killing them. Furthermore, if the players' avatars are killed, the players will also die in real life. Every player is now fighting for their lives. Kirito's experience and combat prowess allows him to survive for much longer than most, but every day, more players are killed and no one has been able to escape. Kirito meets and falls in love with a fellow female player named Asuna. The two of them work together, gathering a band of fellow players, to ascend the tower and escape from SAO, but the dangers they face in SAO are not the only ones they have to deal with. . .
