The first game was released on Sega Dreamcast on December 23, 1998. It is the first fully 3D Sonic game. Sega's previous console Sega Saturn ultimately never got a main 3D Sonic platform game. It introduced quite a few changes to the franchise, marking the beginning of the 'Modern' era of Sonic games. Sonic, Amy Rose, and Ivo Robotnik's designs were altered although they retain their distinctive color schemes and subsequent games used the designs in this game. The game Sonic Generations explained the different appearances as a result of the characters being older so Sonic Adventure and all other Sonic games made since then canonically take place a few years after the Sega Genesis and Saturn Sonic games. The developers wanted to give the game a soundtrack with a different feel from the old games, and decided on giving this game a more rock-based soundtrack and to that end, hired vocalists like Johnny Gioeli, Ted Poley, and Tony Harnell. The soundtrack was composed by Senoue Jun. From this game onwards, most major Sonic games until Sonic Unleashed would also feature a rock heavy soundtrack composed by Senoue. The game is the first in the series to feature extensive voice acting for all main characters. Dr. Ivo Robotnik is once again after the Chaos Emeralds. This time he plans to use the emeralds to power up a blue creature he has discovered called Chaos so that it can become strong enough to wipe out the city Station Square. Sonic and co. race against time to stop Robotnik's plans. Along the way their paths intertwine and they learn more about the dark history of Chaos. The game features multiple playable characters. In order to access the full story, the player must play as all of the characters, each of whom have different play styles. Sonic and Tails' levels have similar gameplay to the 2d Sonic platformers except in 3d. Knuckles' levels are slower paced, emphasizing treasure hunting and exploration. Amy's levels involve her running away from a robot named Zero. Big the Cat's levels are the slowest paced and involve fishing. E-102 Gamma's levels involve shooting up enemies while getting to the end of the level. The game introduces the hub world into the series. In between levels, the characters travel around and explore the hub world to either relax or unlock new levels. Sonic Adventure 2 removes the hub world, but the idea has been used on and off again in subsequent Sonic games. The game also introduces the very popular side mode called the Chao Garden where players can take care of and raise the cute eponymous creatures. Chaos became recurring characters in the series. The anime Sonic X is based off of Sonic Adventure 1 and 2. Speed Highway was included in Sonic Generations and the game's final boss battle was also included as a boss fight in Sonic Generations.
