He began his career as an animator, working on the 1982 series Choujiju Yousai Macross and went on to form Gainax in 1984. At Gainax, he directed four anime series: Top_wo_Nerae!, Fushigi_no_Umi_no_Nadia, Neon_Genesis_Evangelion, and Kareshi_Kanojo_no_Jijou and became the most well known animator to emerge from the studio. Evangelion, in particular, became hugely influential on the anime industry and ended up being his most well known work. In spite of his successes, he is also known for having serious struggles with depression, which has significantly impacted his career choices. Nadia's production was so frustrating for him that it influenced Evangelion's focus on the cast's many neuroses. Evangelion's success did not necessarily make him happier as he received letters harshly criticizing him for the series' controversial finale. This partially led him to undergo a period in his life where he turned against anime/manga fandom and began focusing on live action film work. However, he eventually reconciled with otaku during the 2000s and returned to anime with Re:_Cutie_Honey. He resigned from Gainax in 2007 and formed Studio Khara, where he revisited his most well known series with Rebuild of Evangelion. He is notably one of the few creators to find success both as an anime creator and as a live action filmmaker. In the 21st century, he also became known for creating his own installments of various long-running Japanese franchises. He first did this with his Cutie Honey live action film and accompanying anime Re: Cutie Honey, and took this further with his Shin series of films. All of these installments pay loving homage to the original works while updating things for the present day and adding his own signature style. His live action films also feature his penchant for visual experimentation that shows up in his anime with the camera frequently being placed in unorthodox positions. He is married to mangaka Anno_Moyoco and is close friends with Miyazaki_Hayao who he had worked with on Nausicaa. He has also been depicted as a manga character himself, being one of the main characters of the autobiographical manga Insufficient Direction, created by Anno's wife. He also appears in the Shimamoto Kazuhiko manga Aoi_Honou, which tells the story of Gainax's founders college life. In the TV adaptation of the manga, he is played by Yasuda Ken. In 1994, his astronomer friend Nakamura Akihisa named a minor planet named after him: 9081 Hideakianno. His fantasy/science fiction work is known for his massive and bizarre monster designs as well as detailed focus on technology and urban cityscapes. He is known for using rapid cuts: for example, a scene will start out focusing on 2 characters talking before suddenly cutting to a shot of a piece of scenery while the characters are still talking, or cut to a black screen with white text which often depicts the characters' thoughts. He frequently works with composer Sagisu Shiro.
