Now Viewing: maternity_markTag type: General マタニティマーク (mataniti maaku) The maternity mark is a badge, pin, tag, etc. worn by pregnant women in Japan to let others know about the bearer's state, so mothers-to-be can get access to seats in public transportation, help climbing stairs, etc. The most common design is a pink heart bearing the image of a cartoon mother and a baby inside it. Below the heart, a caption reads: おなかに赤ちゃんがいます (Onaka ni aka-chan ga imasu, "There’s a baby inside me"). Walk down the street or ride a train in Japan, and you will often see a heart-shaped keychain bearing the image of a mother and baby dangling from a woman’s bag. Known as a maternity mark, this simple illustration informs others that the bearer is pregnant. Introduced by the Ministry of Health, Labor, and Welfare in 2006 as part of a broader program promoting maternal health, the mark has become a standard symbol for expectant mothers. [...] Pins, badges, and similar items printed with the mark are commonly provided at municipal offices to mothers registering for the boshi techou (mother-child health handbook).
