The series began in 1983 and is still ongoing. The series is set in a post-apocalyptic Earth that resembles the late 19th-early 20th century with some futuristic trappings. In this world, vampires, referred to as Nobles, are at the top of the food chain and they spent thousands of years terrorizing humanity. However, their grip over humanity is steadily fading and they are not as all powerful as they once were. A class of hunters has formed to combat the Nobles and their assorted supernatural minions. One of the best of these hunters is the series protagonist D, a mysterious and taciturn dhampir, whose left hand is a sentient and much more talkative symbiote. The series follows the adventures of D as he takes on various jobs around the Earth. The first novel was adapted into a 1985 anime OVA directed by Ashida Toyoo, written by Hirano Yasushi, and has a soundtrack composed by Komuro Tetsuya. The third novel was adapted into the 2000 anime film Vampire_Hunter_D:_Bloodlust. The series has also been adapted into a manga with art by Saiko_Takaki that ran from 2007 to 2014. The manga was meant to be the most complete adaptation of the novels, with each volume covering one story arc from the manga, but the manga ultimately concluded before the novels were completed.
