The group started with Tokino_Sora who debuted on September 7, 2017 and grew to include over twenty members who are largely cute females except for the 'Holostars.' They are marketed as a group of virtual idols. Their content consists of songs, comedic skits, and video game streams/playthroughs. Each member has their own channel full of content, but as they are all part of one agency, they will often interact with each other and appear in each other's videos as well as appear in videos in their parent channel. As their content is stream-heavy, the vtubers have plenty of interaction with fans. Although each vtuber has a set rough backstory, the vtubers often include personal anecdotes from their actual life albeit with names redacted to protect their identities in their streams, making the line between the vtuber character and the actual person blurrier than earlier vtubers. Besides their original vocal songs, the hololive vtubers often use music from Dova-Syndrome as their BGM. The vtubers usually use live 2d models in their streams that mostly show the top half of their bodies, but once a vtuber gets 100,000 subscribers, they become eligible for a more fluidly animated 3d model. The group started off with relatively modest success, but notably experienced a major popularity boom starting around late 2019 with newer members getting the coveted 100,000 subscriber goal at increasingly fast rates leading to them becoming the most successful vtuber agency besides Nijisanji. By November 2019, it had a total of 2.6 million subscribers on Youtube and 3.5 million on bilibili. Four of its members also made the Top 10 Virtual Youtubers on Bilibili by April 2019. The group crossed over with the popular ship game Azur Lane as playable characters complete with in-jokes related to their videos. hololive were also one of the many vtuber groups to make guest appearances in the game Neptunia game, VVVtune, whose story heavily involves vtubers. Sora, Roboco, Sakura, Fubuki, Aqua, Choco, Korone, Noel, and Marine were made into support characters in said game.
