It is localized as Maquia: When the Promised Flower Blooms in English. It is a fantasy drama anime film animated by P.A._Works, and is notably the directorial debut of popular female anime screenwriter Okada Mari, who also wrote the story. The characters were designed by Yoshida_Akihiko. The soundtrack was composed by Kawai Kenji. It was released on February 24, 2018. It is set in fantasy world that has a race of slow-aging humans, known as Iorphs. The Iorphs, aware of the complications their near-immortality would cause them in interactions with other races, live in a secluded area away from regular humans and send messages to each other via cloth-weaving. Maquia is a shy orphan Iorph girl who's friends with fellow Iorphs Lelia and Krim. In spite of these bonds, Maquia suffers from loneliness and longs to know what having a family feels like. The Iorph elder, Racine, counters Maquia, warning her that forming bonds with outsiders is true loneliness. Maquia and her fellow Iorphs are forced into the outside world when soldiers from the kingdom of Mezarte attack their home. The king of Mezarte wants to harness the Iorph's longevity in order to extend his kingdom/bloodline's lifespan. To that end, his troops kidnap Leilia so that she can sire a long-living heir. Maquia is separated from her fellow Iorphs and stumbles upon a human baby trapped in the clutches of his dead biological mother. Maquia chooses to disregard her elder's warning and opts to act as the mother of this baby, who she names Ariel. The story spans decades as it follows Maquia's attempts to be a good mother to Ariel and how Maquia's long journey intersects with her fellow Iorphs and the people she meets over her long life. The film grossed $4.3 million dollars worldwide and received generally positive critical reviews.
