It is a mecha action/romance/idol anime TV series animated by Satelight. It ran from April 3, 2016 to September 25, 2016. It was directed by series franchise co-creator Kawamori_Shouji and Yasuda Kenji. The story was written by Nemoto Toshizo. This installment is notable for featuring a team of idol singers named Walkure as its central characters and performers in the soundtrack as opposed to the solo singers seen in most Macross works. The songs are sung by the seiyuu for Walkure's members except for Mikumo Guynemer whose singing voice is provided by newcomer singer Junna_(singer) while Koshimizu Ami provides her speaking voice. The other main newcomer was Suzuki_Minori who voices and sings for Freyja Wion. The soundtrack consists of J-pop songs performed by Walkure, and instrumental songs composed by Kubota Mina, Suzuki Saeko, and Tomisiro. The characters were designed by Mita_Chisato. The anime was adapted into a compilation film that retells the story of the TV series with more emphasis on Walkure and some minor changes to the plot. The TV series received a sequel film titled Macross Delta the Movie: Absolute Live!!!!!! in 2021. It is set eight years after its predecessor Macross Frontier. The galaxy is faced with a new threat in the form of the Var Syndrome, a deadly syndrome that causes its victims to go berserk and attack others. This syndrome is made even more dangerous thanks to the Windermere Kingdom, a kingdom of short-lived humanoids distinguished by their small symbol-shaped antennas whose culture is inspired by medieval Europe, who have weaponized it as part of a revenge campaign against the New United Government. However, music can be used to calm down and reverse its symptoms and to combat this threat, the tactical idol singer group, Walkure, is formed. Walkure works with a team of mecha pilots called Delta to protect the galaxy's populace from the syndrome. The series follows two newcomers to the ongoing war: Hayate Immelmann, a teen boy who wanders from job to job with no clear direction in life, and Freyja Wion, a teen Windermerian with a deep love of singing that was inspired by Walkure. The two of them meet each other by chance and are immediately caught in a battle between the Delta Flight and Windermere. During the battle, both Hayate and Freyja reveal their potential for flight and music respectively and catch the attention of Delta Flight and Walkure. The two of them undergo training in their respective positions and quickly discover that their abilities directly affect each other. As the war with Windermere heats up, Hayate and Freyja must learn how to be in harmony with each other to both achieve their respective dreams and help win the war. For this series' combat scenes, Kawamori wanted to place emphasis on one-on-one dogfights, which was something that wasn't done as often outside of the Macross OVAs. Kawamori chose the title Delta to represent the main tenets of the Macross franchise: music, a love triangle, and the Valkyrie, which in this series refers to the mecha and to the idol singer group Walkure.
