It was founded on May 15, 2006 by Kun Gao, James Lin, Brandon Ooi, and Vu Nguyen, all of whom were UC Berkeley graduates and anime fans. From the beginning, Crunchyroll hosted subtitled anime and drama episodes on its site, but in the early days, the legality of their practices was questionable and this led to the site being criticized by major anime licensing/distribution companies such as Funimation and Bandai Entertainment. This led to Crunchyroll changing the content it hosted and the manner in how they acquired said content. In the late 2000s, it began striking deals with anime studios/distributors to get the rights to stream anime it was interested in while removing the previous copyright-infringing content. On January 9, 2009, Crunchyroll successfully struck a deal with TV Tokyo to host subtitled episodes of Naruto Shippuden. These developments led to Crunchyroll becoming a legal streaming service and one of the most prominent anime streaming websites. The site's original logo was an orange circle enveloped in a black shell, resembling an abstract depiction of sushi, which is what the website's name alludes to. In 2012, the logo was altered so that the shell was also colored orange and made more circular in shape. The logo still resembles an abstract depiction of sushi, but also resembles a stylized depiction of large anime character eyes. Besides hosting episodes, Crunchyroll features news articles reporting on the current events of the anime industry and hosts their own anime awards shows. It also developed its own mascot, Hime_(Crunchyroll), an orange-haired ninja girl, who was designed by Eunice Dahae Baik and was selected from a contest of over 100 entries, debuted in 2012.
