It ran from February 1, 1989 to April 1, 1990. It is part of the Universal Century timeline of the Gundam franchise and is a sequel to Char's Counterattack, specifically the novel adaption of said film Beltorchika's Children, which has a few key story differences from the film. It is set twelve years after the Second Neo Zeon War where Char Aznable was finally defeated for good and Zeon has been accepted back into the Earth Federation. However, there has yet to be true peace. The upper echelons of the Federation are plagued with corruption and they have formed police forces to deport civilians they deem undesirable to space colonies. In response, a rebel/terrorist group named Mafty, which is led by a mysterious leader who goes by Mafty Nauve Erin, has been formed to combat the corrupt Federation. The story follows three central characters: a grown up Hathaway Noa, a supporting character in his previous Gundam appearances, who is the son of the famous captain Bright Noa, Gigi Andalusia, a wealthy young woman who quickly deduces that Hathaway is actually Mafty himself and becomes interested in him, and Kenneth Sleg, the new Federation commander who has been assigned to stop Mafty. Kenneth is unaware that Hathaway is actually Mafty and Hathaway himself finds his relationships with Gigi and Kenneth to be affecting his commitment to his mission as Mafty's leader. The conflict between Mafty and the Federation forces heats up once Hathaway gets his hands on the latest prototype Gundam, the Xi Gundam, and the trio must decide where they stand on the Mafty vs. Federation conflict. The novel was first adapted as part of the SD Gundam G Generation games and the characters introduced in this novel were voice acted for the first time. The characters in this appearance more closely resembled Mikimoto's original art. The novel was adapted again as a trilogy of anime films, which started on June 11, 2021. The movies updated the aesthetics and technology to reflect the 2020s, and the characters were redesigned by Uchida_Pablo, Onda_Naoyuki, and Kuhara_Shigeki, which resulted in some characters looking very different from past incarnations. The films were directed by Murase_Shukou, who had a long history of working on the Gundam franchise as an animator and character designer. The soundtrack was composed by Sawano Hiroyuki in his third Gundam anime soundtrack. The cast of characters were played by different seiyuu from their previous appearances. The film adaptation was a box office success with the first film earning 1,016,249,400 yen, the first Gundam film to break the 1 billion yen mark since its prequel Char's Counterattack.
