Now Viewing: circumcisionTag type: General Circumcision is a surgical procedure performed on men that removes the foreskin from the end of the penis, believed to improve cleanliness and prevent disease. In addition, certain genetic flaws that can be inherited from father to son cause the foreskin to be too tight around the glans of the penis, a problem which gets worse as the male gets older, ultimately requiring circumcision to fix. Some religions, such as Judaism, require that all male children be circumcised shortly after birth. Other religions, like Islam, Druzism, and Ethiopian Orthodox Christianity consider it a rite of passage. Certain African cultures provide circumcsion of both men and women as an optional rite of passage before marraige, as the foreskin and clitoris are seen as androgynous body parts belonging to the other gender. However this is no longer practiced due to the international perception and controversies of female circumcision.
