The title is also a Japanese pun: 冥途 is pronounced as meido, the Japanese pronunciation of the English word maid, but the characters themselves actually mean underworld reflecting the actual nature of the series. It is a multimedia franchise developed by Cygames and P.A._Works with the first installment being an anime TV series that ran from October 5, 2022 to December 23, 2022. It superficially resembles, and in some initial marketing, was promoted as a workplace comedy, but it's actually a yakuza crime action comedy in disguise. The anime was directed by Masuda Souichi and written by Hiki Yoshihiro. The soundtrack was composed by Ike Yoshihiro and the vocal songs, which are a mixture of idol pop that one may expect to hear at maid cafes and enka songs reminiscent of classic yakuza films/TV series, are performed by the main cast's seiyuu. It is set in 1999, Akihabara, the technological and otaku center of Tokyo, Japan, which is also famous for featuring numerous maid cafes. Wahira Nagomi is a teen girl who has just arrived in the city and dreams of being a cute maid at a maid cafe. Soon after she arrives, she sees a flier for the pig-themed maid cafe Ton Tokoton, which is looking for new recruits, and leaps at the opportunity to get her dream job. Nagomi quickly learns that she has gotten way in over her head when she goes to work. Ton Tokoton is saddled with crippling debt thanks to its manager's incompetence and on Nagomi's first assignment, she learns that the maids in this series' universe operate more like yakuza, complete with bloody turf wars and cutthroat political manuevering. Nagomi is so shaken by this revelation that she initially wants out of the maid life, but she is soon forced to stay in. Now, Nagomi must work with her fellow Ton Tokotan members which include Mannen Ranko, a fellow rookie maid who's older that the vast majority of maids, to get Ton Tokoton out of the red and survive in this deadly world of maid cafes.
