It was developed by Nintendo for the Nintendo_Switch. It was directed by Mouri Shiro, who previously directed New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe, and produced by Tezuka Takashi. The art was handled by Sato_Masanobu. The score was written by long-time Mario franchise composers Kondo Koji, Fujii Shiho, Doi Sayako, and Shimazu Chisaki. It was released on October 20, 2023. Mario and friends have been invited to visit the Flower Kingdom, which is ruled by Prince Florian. The kingdom has a special Wonder Flower, which is soon stolen by Mario's perennial nemesis Bowser, giving him the ability to merge with and steal Florian's castle. Bowser traps the kingdom's populace forcing Mario and co. to work with Florian to recover 6 Royal Seeds that will give them access to Bowser's new castle and save the kingdom. This installment marks a first for many aspects of the Mario franchise. It's one of the rare instances where Bowser does not attempt to kidnap Peach for the entire game, allowing her to be a fully playable character from beginning to end. It is the first main Mario platformer to have Princess Daisy as a playable character. This game offers up to 8 playable characters, the Mario Bros, the Princesses, Toad, Toadette, Yoshi, and Nabbit. The game removes the timer and score system that has been tradition for 2D Mario games since Super Mario Bros. 1, allowing the players to take as long as they want to complete each level. This game marks the debut of Kevin Afghani as the new voice of the Mario Bros after Charles Martinet's retirement. This game offers new power ups in the form of fruit with the most prominent being one that can turn the characters into elephants. It also give the players the ability to equip badges that can give characters extra abilities. New level gimmicks include fully musical levels where the environment not only moves to the beat, but the enemies also sing the songs' melodies. The game allows for multiplayer and introduces a new online multiplayer mechanic where players can play with other players online while going through levels on top of the co-op gameplay that NSMB introduced. The player will see the other online players as a Mario Kart-esque ghost so the players will not interfere with each other during gameplay. With this game, Mouri wanted to bring back the sense of mystery that Super Mario bros. 1 had, hence the game's title and central word Wonder. To that end, the game takes the franchise's surreal cartoonish aesthetic even further in the characters' animation and the environment. The Wonder Flowers, once consumed, visually distort the environment in various ways and more emphasis was placed on exploration and transportation.
