The original manga ran from April 1995 to January 1997 before switching magazines and continuing as Trigun Maximum in October 1997. Maximum ran until March 2007. It also received a Madhouse anime adaptation in 1998, which diverges from the manga, partially because the manga had not been finished yet, and has its own ending though despite the differences, it retains a lot of core concepts. The anime is directed by Nishimura Satoshi and written by Kuroda Yousuke. The rock and guitar-heavy soundtrack is composed by Imahori Tsuneo. The characters were designed by Yoshimatsu_Takahiro. It has also received an anime film titled Badlands Rumble which is set in the anime continuity and premiered in 2010. It is set in the desert planet Gunsmoke in the distant future. Insurance agents Meryl Strife and Milly Thompson have been assigned to follow Vash the Stampede, an infamously destructive outlaw with a $$ 60,000,000,000 bounty on his head. They soon discover that Vash is nothing like they imagined; despite his formidable skills with a gun, he is actually a pacifist who goes out of his way to avoid killing anyone in the numerous gunfights he's reluctantly participated in. The agents tag along with Vash, but things soon grow much more serious and dangerous once Vash's estranged brother and philosophical opposite Millions Knives sends the ruthless Gung-ho Guns after Vash, putting his ideals to the test. Besides the exaggerated gunplay action between superhuman fighters, the series has a strong focus on philosophy and the story emphasizes the competing ideologies of its cast, particularly between Vash and Knives. The anime's next episode previews consist of Vash making some philosophical musings while footage of the next episode plays. The anime is also known for starting off almost entirely comedic but gradually transforms into a more serious narrative. The anime is known for being particularly popular in North America, which is why the film Badlands Rumble premiered there. It also launched the voice acting career of Johnny Yong Bosch who played Vash the Stampede and was previously known for starring in the live action series Power Rangers. After remaining dormant for over a decade, the franchise revived with another anime adaptation titled Trigun_Stampede. This adaptation was animated by Orange and is done entirely in 3d much like their previous anime. Besides this aesthetic difference, Vash has also been slightly redesigned with his trademark spiky hair toned down while the lens of his sunglasses have become bigger. It was handled by an entirely different cast and crew from past adaptations with this adaptation directed by Mutou Kenji and Tajima Kouji acting as concept designer.
