It is the most successful spinoff of the Shin Megami Tensei franchise. This JRPG series was spun off of the what-if game Shin Megami Tensei if. The first few games (Persona 1 and Persona 2 Innocent Sin and Eternal Punishment) are dungeon crawling games that are comparatively closer in style to the Shin Megami Tensei main series although they lack the ability for the player to choose factions. Persona 3 and 4 combine the dungeon crawling with slice of life social sim elements while Persona 4 The Ultimate in Mayonaka Arena is a 2D fighting game, albeit one that continues the story of the Persona games. The games are for the most part stand alone with a different set of heroes and villains in each game although they are set in the same universe. Persona 2 Innocent Sin and Persona 4 are the only games to have a canon direct sequel (Eternal Punishment for the former and The Ultimate in Mayonaka Arena plus the spinoffs centering on Naoto and Yosuke for the latter) Persona 3 received an updated rerelease that includes a story arc that continues after the original's ending.
