Now Viewing: vandreadTag type: Copyright 2000 Space opera mecha action romance comedy series directed by Mori Takeshi and written by Takashi Natsuko. It was animated by Gonzo. Characters were originally designed by Inoue_Sora and in the final product designed by Kuroda_Kazuya. The mechs are designed by Ebikawa Kanatake, Masuo Shoichi, and Miyao Yoshikazu. Music is composed by Iwasaki Yasunori. It consists of two 13 episode series. The second series continues directly after the first ends and resolves the main storyline. At one point, a sequel to the series was planned, but it seems like it won't be released. It is set in a universe where relations between men and women have gotten so bad that both genders have decided to live separately from each other, often fight with each other, and even prefer to have relationships with others of the same sex. Men live on the gritty planet Tarak and have developed a very macho and military oriented culture. Reproduction is handled by combining two men's genes with a machine. The planet has few resources so resourcefulness is highly valued. Women live on the planet Mejeiru, which has much more resources and has been used to build elegant architecture. The women on the planet are able to develop superior technology thanks to bountiful resources. Protagonist Hibiki Tokai is an unusually short low class laborer on Taraaku and one night he bets his peers that he can steal a mecha called the Vanguard from a battleship that is about to launch to battle the Mejeiru women. Unfortunately for him, the battleship launches before he can get the mech out and he is dragged into a large scale battle between the men and the women. He is taken captive by the women along with Duero McFile and Bart Garsus. The Taraaku forces refuse to let the Mejeiru women have the last laugh and launch missiles at the captured battleship even though Hibiki, Duero, and Bart are still inside. However, the battleship, out of the Mejeiru women's control, somehow destroys the missiles and escapes into a wormhole. The ship warps into a distant part of the galaxy and appears to have gained new and mysterious functions. The Vanguard mecha that Hibiki was planning to steal and the mechs, known as Dreads, of three female pilots (Dita Liebely, Meia Gisborn, and Jura Basil Eden) have also been altered, gaining the ability to combine. Hibiki, Duero, and Bart are stuck with the women and relations between them and the rest of the women are tense although Dita is quite friendly to Hibiki and finds him fascinating as she has never had any experience with men before. Things continue to get worse as a mysterious alien race relentlessly sends forces to attack the battleship. Both sexes soon realize that they must work together in order to survive and return to their home; Hibiki learns that he must learn to work together with the three pilots by mastering how to combine their mechs in order to fight with greater efficiency. The anime makes extensive use of computer graphics in rendering the mechs and the large scale battles. Despite the large female dominant cast and harem-esque elements, only a select few female characters express attraction towards Hibiki. The series also adds a lot of Freudian sexual suggestiveness to the concept of combining mechs.
